Lil Pump’s song, “Molly,” loosely about doing drugs in designer clothes, isn’t much different than his previous ones. If nothing else, “Molly” is among the more fully written songs he’s made, stretching the limits of his wordplay. His verse follows a theme and commits, unlike previous outings, where he moves almost idly through his flows without rhyme or reason. But there’s nothing worthwhile happening inside these spiraling cadences, which never change pace or direction. His songs are overly reliant on a hook-heavy simplicity that can make them catchy and easy to recite, but gives them a short shelf life. It’s worth noting that “Molly” has racked up 1 million plays on SoundCloud in two days, and hundreds of thousands more on YouTube. There seems to be something about his impetuousness that appeals to listeners—and showgoers. But if “Molly” is any indication, it’s only a matter of time before this one-trick pony tires itself out.
